The medieval gardens tour

 - Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, Alsace, France

Did you like the tour of the château garden? Then you'll definitely enjoy going around the 10 other gardens of the neighbouring 'communes touristiques' (villages with good facilities for visitors/tourist attractions located in the area around the château du Haut-Koenigsbourg and the Alsace Wine Route). The tours are free of charge and are a great way to learn lots of interesting things.

Over the past few years, medieval-style gardens have been springing up in the villages around the château du Haut-Koenigsbourg. The idea is to create a tour of medieval gardens which will reflect the culture and heritage of each village in question.

Let your senses speak to you - breathe in the sounds and smells of each garden has something different to tell you!

An idea that brings people together

The château does not have a monopoly on Alsace's medieval history. There are many signs in the villages of the foothills that point to a bustling medieval past: ditches, town walls, fortified cemeteries etc.

The garden of the château du Haut-Koenigsbourg has a huge assortment of medieval plants: ornamental plants, 'simples' (medicinal plants), other useful plants, a vegetable garden, climbing plants, herbs with supposedly magical properties… it's all here. Each of the other 10 gardens on the tour route has chosen to look at a specific plant type or theme, adopting their own particular approach to do so.

A garden for everyone

There are many different gardens, but no two gardens look the same. Each one nurtures its own unique identity in line with the history of its village and the resources the village has at its disposal. This is one tour you'll not tire of! Each garden revolves around a different profession represented by a fictional or non-fictional character, different plants and different communities, teaching us new things all the time.
