Tour description

Thanks to the restoration of the château du Haut-Koenigsbourg at the beginning of the 20th century, students have a ready-made teaching tool which will enable them to better understand life in a medieval mountain fortress. The heritage workshop programme is divided between time spent visiting the castle and more 'in-depth' and 'hands-on' activities in the on-site classroom.

By taking a sensory approach to the natural environment and participating in a series of activities that will really bring your senses to life, you will start to understand something of the natural resources available to medieval society.

First, you will discover the natural world in its cultivated state in the form of the medieval garden. You will learn both how it is set out and the symbolism that lies behind it. Then you will explore the wilder side of nature, travelling through a woodland world full of useful resources and supernatural beings. In the event of rain, this workshop will be replaced by the heraldry workshop.

Heraldry workshop

This workshop only runs if the 'take a walk on the wild (and not so wild) side' workshop is cancelled due to rain. The aim of this workshop is to gain an understanding of the basics of heraldry. The castle guide will first ask the children if they know what a coat of arms is. Then they'll take the class off on a voyage of discovery, looking at examples of this art to be found in the castle.

In the classroom, students will study the history of coats of arms from their earliest days onwards, tracing developments in the field. Next will be an exploration of the rules that governed how coats of arms were designed (the symbolism of different colours, how designs were chosen). Then everyone will get the chance to design their own coat of arms according to the rules of heraldry.

Hours of departure are defined during the reservation.
