Monument's life
Handcrafted tiles for a royal roof !
After visiting Girold Constructions Bois, we went to meet Dupasquier & Bloino, hard at work on the Bastion en étoile construction site. Up there, an exceptional project is underway: the restoration of a roof unlike any other.
Each tile tells a story. Handmade by the Niderviller tile factory, they come in 11 colours – red, glazed green, ochre, black, etc. These varied colours give the roof a lively, slightly aged appearance, perfectly in keeping with the castle's aesthetic.
The company Dupasquier & Bloino, responsible for the roofing, uses a rare and demanding technique: crowned laying. This consists of fixing a first row of tiles nailed to the battens, then a second row sealed with lime on top. The result is double protection, invisible to the naked eye, but extremely effective against the elements.
And as each tile is slightly different in width – the nature of the craft! – the roofers have to constantly adjust and accept small irregularities as signs of character. It is a job that requires precision and patience, carried out with respect for the building and the local climate.
More than just a roof, it is a true work of art at the top of Haut-Koenigsbourg!
