Amphibian rescue operation
Amphibian rescue
Spring is coming... and so are the migrations!
In the forest, the amphibians are raring to go!
That's right, toads, frogs, newts and salamanders spend the winter in the forest, warm under dead leaves. In February, they hop out of their hiding places to return to the pond where they were born.
There, it's time to dance: encounters, reunions, amphibians enjoy life, no doubt about it!
Then, once the mating season is over, they all return to the forest and even to our gardens. By devouring mosquitoes, slugs and ants, they do us a great service and contribute fully to the balance of ecosystems.
But what is the connection with Haut-Koenigsbourg?
Roads are one of their greatest dangers. This includes the road leading to the HK.
Every year, thousands of amphibians die under the wheels of cars. Their populations have fallen sharply in recent decades.
To limit the damage, rescue operations are carried out throughout Europe. Volunteers take turns every morning to identify the amphibians, count them and help them cross the road safely.
On the climb to the HK, we saved 857 amphibians in 2025.
